Prof. Dr. Nurcholish Madjid or Cak Nur, was born in Jombang, East Java, March 17 1939. Cak Nur was an Islamic thinker, scholar, and Indonesian humanist. In his youth, he was an activist of the Islamic Students Association or Himpunan Mahasiswa Islam (HMI). He grew up in a prominent scholar’s family environment in Mojoanyar, Mojokerto, East Java.
After completing his study in various Islamic boarding schools, including Gontor in Ponorogo and higher studies at IAIN Jakarta (1961-1968), he underwent his doctoral study at the University of Chicago, United States (1978-1984), with a dissertation on philosophy and Kalam Ibnu Taimiyah. He also was a lecturer in IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah, 1972-1976; Postgraduate lecturer at IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah, 1985; researcher at LIPI, 1978; professor at McGill University, Montreal, Canada, 1991 to 1992; Fellow of the Eisenhower Fellowship, with his wife Omi Komaria Madjid, 1990. Cak Nur also wrote many papers published in various magazines, newspapers and edits books, some of which are in English.
Since 1986, Cak Nur and his friends in Jakarta, founded and led a foundation Yayasan Wakaf Paramadina, of which activities were to lead to Intellectual Islam Movement in Indonesia. Since 1991 he serverd as the Vice Chairman Expert Board of the Indonesian Moslem Intellectuals Association or Ikatan Cendekiawan Muslim se-Indonesia (ICMI), and as Rector of the University of Paramadina.
In 1995, Cak Nur with Professor Doctor Komaruddin Hidayat and Drs. Ahmad Fuadi established Madania Education Foundation Indonesia or Yayasan Pendidikan Madania Indonesia (YPMI), and in 1996 established Madania School.
Cak Nur died at the age of 66 years in Jakarta, August 29, 2005.
Drs. Achmad Fuadi was born in 1934. In 1964, he began studying at the University of Indonesia (UI), Salemba, graduated in 1964 and then worked at PT Adhi Karya.
While still studying, in 1963 Achmad Fuadi with a few friends founded the Institute of Teacher Training and Education or Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan (IKIP) and founded the Faculty of Economics, University of Muhammadiyah. Ahmad Fuadi then became the Dean of the Faculty of Economics for 30 years (1966-1994). At the same time, he also was mandated as the Assistant Dean at IKIP (1962-1970).
In 1972 Achmad Fuadi was elected for Director of PT Adhi Karya at the age of 38 years from 1972 to 1991, and retired in 1992. At the time he was involved in the development process of the National Monument (Monas) and the Istiqlal Mosque. He used his retirement time to attend Islamic studies events, and in that year he was acquainted with Nurcholish Madjid, and then knew Komaruddin Hidayat when he was following recitation classes in Paramadina. Activities in Paramadina took him to be elected as Executive Director of Endowments Foundation or Yayasan Wakaf Paramadina (1993-1994). At that time he found three people who couls understand Cak Nur’s ideas, namely Komarudin Hidayat, Budhy Munawar-Rachman and Muhammad Wahyu Nafis, so he conceived in his mind the need for an educational institutions based on Cak Nur’s ideas.
Thus, in 1995, Achmad Fuadi together with Cak Nur, and Komaruddin Hidayat established Madania Educational Foundation Indonesia or Yayasan Pendidikan Madania Indonesia (YPMI). In 1996 YPMI then established Madania School in Parung, Bogor.
Achmad Fuadi died on October 11, 2013.
Prof. Dr. Komaruddin Hidayat was born in Magelang, Central Java, October 18, 1953. Besides becoming an academic, Komaruddin is also a columnist in the mass media and researcher at several institutions and research studies. Komaruddin Hidayat is an Alumni of the Modern Islamic Boarding School Pabelan, Magelang (1969) and Al-Iman Islamic School, Muntilan (1971). After graduating from school, he continued Bachelor Studies (BA) in the field of Islamic Education (1977) and earned a full degree (Drs.) in the fields of Islamic Education (1981) at IAIN Jakarta.
He then went on to doctoral study abroad and earned a Doctorate in Philosophy Field of the West in the Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey (1990). On October 17, 2006, he was elected as the Rector of the State Islamic University (UIN) Syarif Hidayatullah. Komaruddin Hidayat is a columnist in some mass media such as Kompas, Seputar Indonesia and Republika. As an academic, Komaruddin became a lecturer at the Graduate Faculty of IAIN Jakarta (since 1990), lecturer at the Graduate School of the University of Indonesia (since 1992), lecturer of Driyarkara Philosophy High School or Sekolah Tinggi Filsafat (STF) Driyarkara (since 1993).
Aside from being a lecturer, he is also an editorial board of Ulumul Qur’an magazine (since 1991), editorial board of Jurnal Studia Islamika (since 1994), the Board of Editors in the writing of Encylopedia of Islamic World and Director of the Development Center for the Contemporary Islamic Study, UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta (since 1995). Until now he still one of the researchers in Paramadina Endowment Foundation or Yayasan Wakaf Madania, Jakarta since 1990.
Since completing his Doctoral Degree in the Field of Philosophy at the University of Ankara, Turkey in 1990, he joined the Foundation Endowments Paramadina or Yayasan Wakaf Paramadina in Jakarta. In 1995, together with Professor Dr. Nurcholish Madjid and Drs. Ahmad Fuadi, founded the Education Foundation Madania Indonesia or Yayasan Pendidikan Madania Indonesia (YPMI). In 1996, YPMI established Madania School, and Komaruddin Hidayat became the coach and an active contributor to the present time.
